Don't eat anything that glows
The Amazing Maurice and His Educated RodentsMaurice’s “Don't eat anything that glows” is a small rule with a revealing history: it separates his cautious scavenging from the Rats’ exposure to magical waste, while leaving unexplained how they both became intelligent.
The Motto and Its Context
The phrase appears in Maurice’s reflection on the period before his mind began to race. He remembers a life of steering people toward the food he wanted, but his new intelligence makes him reconsider what might have changed him. He is sure he never ate anything magical, and the motto gives that certainty a blunt, memorable form: avoid anything that glows.
The Dump Behind the Wizards' University
The Rats’ home was also their source of food: a dump behind the Wizards' University. The discarded material included worn-out spell-books, candle stubs, the remains of green bubbling mixtures from cauldrons, and ordinary rubbish such as tin cans, boxes, and kitchen waste. The wizards had marked some of it as dangerous and toxic, but the Rats could not read the warnings and were attracted to the candle ends. Maurice, by contrast, says he never ate from the dump.
Caution and Unanswered Origins
The motto is not a full explanation for the animals’ intelligence. Maurice notes that he and the Rats became intelligent at about the same time, but calls the change a mystery. The contrast is suggestive rather than conclusive: the Rats ate magical refuse, while Maurice insists he did not. His rule turns that unresolved difference into practical advice, grounded in the hazardous place where the Rats found both food and discarded magic.
